Cal Wendell, a sensitive young management consultant with an overly anxious disposition, is returning to London after his latest client project. On the train he meets Kendra Velasquez, a small-time American thief who, at the behest of a mysterious benefactor, has purloined a small key from the safe deposit box at a Frankfurt bank. An innocuous misunderstanding brings the two travelers together, setting off a chain of events that will lead them across Europe and inadvertently into the midst of a decades-long feud. At the centre of the struggle is the key possessed by Kendra - and the secrets that it promises to unlock.
James Tenedero lives in Montreal, where he is pursuing graduate studies. The Consistency of Parchment is his first novel.

The consistency of Parchment is as full of action as it gets. Teams of conspirators travel the length and breadth of Europe from London to Norway and back, sometimes fleeing, sometimes pursuing. The plot involves multiple fake and real keys, fake and real safe deposit boxes, real and imagined villains, and real and imagined romance. The book is full of genuinely funny scenes, something that's too much lacking in modern literature, and often forced when you find it at all. Tenedero has an eye for the slapstick, though, and an ear for quirky dialogue, so the comedy is nicely done. On the whole, with the tasty ironic twist at the end, Consistency of Parchment is an entertaining and involving read.The single flaw in my mind is that what's at stake, whom to root for and against, is revealed so late in the book that much of it lacks the dramatic tension I look for in an international thriller. Try it, though. You might disagree, and I'm sure you'll like it just fine.
I have had a crazy week, so I apologize for the lateness of this post.
First, there are the hordes of vegetables that keep appearing at my kitchen on a weekly basis all courtesy of Aagaard Farms & their CSA program. Which in their own way helped me to read the book because I can a be more anti-social and hermit-like reader after work. You can be sure though, there are no spoilers in this review, and I don't really have time to give you a great recipe either, another day though.
I also managed to eat lunch (and thus read) at work all this week. On the other hand, it's back to school time, and I'm so tired by the time I come home that I just want to huddle in a ball and sleep in my giant indigo bedroom. It's also the migraine proof room D.
This book was a relaxing read. Relaxing in the sense that it was not philosophy, or reading requiring introspection/delving into psyches. It was fun, and I had a great time reading it on my lunch hours. It had a great ending, although I thought it was over before the end, which clearly shows the characters I most cared about - Cal and Kendra.
I will admit that it took me a few days to get into the book. I've had a crazy week, not just with work and vegetables, but getting ready to start teaching piano and voice in the fall. I had a piano teacher in university tell me that I'd know when I was ready to teach, and that some people are never ready. Apparently I've decided I am. What does that have to do with the book, probably little, besides the fact that the reason I'm endeared to Kendra is she had an authority figure that she looked up to. She had someone in her life who told her they'd love her no matter what, and that her path would be long and twisted.
Oh wait, me to. Probably more than one actually, but that doesn't matter so much. I didn't like her right away. The poem is what got me.
Which brings me to the two things I felt could be improved. They are rather minor, and just two ideas I thought would make the book better. It's already a good book, and well worth the read if you want to read some fiction/action D .
I wish that the poem would have been formatted in some sort of special way. Perhaps a different font, and set on it's own page (or two).
The second suggestion is simply that the numbered chapters be changed to location. This is partly me being lazy. The book is written with each chapter focusing on a different set of characters (and often location). I've read lots of books like that, and I quite like them, but most of them either have the location as the chapter title, or something to the effect of

The part of me that is lazy? I didn't get the chance to read the book in a few sittings, but instead multiple 1 hour sittings over days at work. I would have spent less time remembering and more time reading if I'd had the 'in-my-face' reminder.
I will also say that the best part of the book was the fact that it read like 1980's Bond movies. I'd actually be really interested in reading a screen adaptation of the book, or something written for theatre. That probably sounds cookie and weird, but I think there's lots of really great scenes in the book, and dialogue between characters that would make for very interesting acting. There are restaurants, trains, planes, and any number of fun location shoots that could be done.
The entire book made me feel like I was watching a movie (not a bad thing ) ) and like I got to see the characters develop over the course of a book. I was a little confused about character connections at the beginning, but that was the point. The book did a great job of being a mystery in the sense of trying to figure out all the connections. I love figuring out connections. . . I'm totally that person who sits in the back of a room and figures everyone out first before approaching anyone.
If you like mystery and a little bit of action with a charming ending read the book. It was an excellent break from the reality of my day.
P.S. The grammar and use of English language in this book are spectacularly clean. D
