With more than 15,000 four- and five-star ratings, an average of 35 messages per day, and hundreds of thousands of profile views from interested suitors, Lauren Urasek was dubbed the most sought-after woman in the city by New York magazine. She then started a popular Tumblr detailing her experiences with Prince Charmings (and Not-So-Charmings) and now tells all in a series of frank, funny essays about the ups and downs of dating in the city that never sleeps.

She's run the gamut of the nominally "single and ready to mingle" males of New York City, from dudes who went in for a kiss within the first 10 minutes to one who conducted an impromptu "girlfriend job interview". And in between the horror stories and dating disasters, Lauren shares some real talk about what works - and what doesn't. Urasek's take on love and romance in the age of the right swipe will make anyone who's ever tried Internet dating laugh, cringe, or both.

Lauren's 22 essays are punctuated by cheeky yet informative sidebars on

  • Red flags you should never ignore
  • Quirky/weird/offbeat ways to find out whether a guy's not right for you
  • The 15 worst usernames
  • A comparison between different online dating services (OKCupid, Tinder, Match, etc.)
  • And much more!

I adored this book!!! I've been "trying" to meet someone via online dating (various sites) for some time, and the scene is better for its entertainment value than for actually meeting guys you'd want to hang out with! (Pls. note that I'm an older single, widowed, and the mature ones really don't change...still want you to think they're real studs, even when they can't perform at all. Instead they'll try to regale you with stories of their "glory days", which grosses me out. Like--I really want to hear "locker room talk" from some jerk in his 60's?)

Long term relationship (LTR)? Why sure...About 90% of the profiles indicate they want to meet that Special Someone to spend the rest of their lives with. Don't necessarily take it seriously. I'm beginning to think that some of these guys' definition of a long term relationship is a 3-day weekend.

Never mind the con-men and scammers...that's another book!

A kinda think the ones in my age group are looking to supplement their social security payments--many seem perfectly happy to move in with a woman, just don't bring up the commitment thing. I'm starting to suspect my Mr. Right is sitting in a nursing home somewhere, and doesn't have Internet access.

My late husband was a great guy--warm, affectionate smart and funny! I guess I'm spoiled. But, no matter who you are, or what your age might be, it's still better to be alone than bogged down in a miserable relationship, with someone who doesn't love or respect you, or worse, is in any way abusive. Online dating is one way to meet people--it just might not be the best way. There are lots of dishonest and dysfunctional people online, so be aware and stay safe.

Popular The Ups and Downs of Online Dating from the Most Popular Girl in New York City  (Audible Audio Edition) Lauren Urasek Laura Barcella Audible Studios Books Reviews

Bought as a gift and the person absolutely loved it. It was funny yet informative on online dating.
Funny, sad, entertaining, and educational, even for a single fifty something.
I was hoping for insights into the online dating world. What I found instead was an admission by the author that she wasn't really sure why she became the most popular girl on OKCupid. Much of it was what I felt was an immature rant and report of various crazy events with men she met or dated. So not worth it.
a fun quick read
its sex and the city meets real life. i have lived in NYC and totally understand the dating there, this book tells it how it is! As a bonus she outs in awesome makeup tips! love her!
I read this book in about 2 hours. It reads like a compilation of juicy blog posts rather than in-depth memoir, but I knew that going in. I found this book to be thoroughly funny and enjoyable. I found many of the author's funny/awkward dating stories to be reflective of my own online dating experience, which made the book all the more entertaining. If you enjoyed Aziz Ansari's Modern Romance, you'll enjoy this as an "it happened to me" tale of modern dating.
I have really mixed feelings about this book. From one side its funny and relatable to anyone whos tried online dating, from another side I really had a hard time actually liking the main character, the author herself, Lauren Urasek. The book is written good, and its easier to read. Urasek includes many stories from the dates with people that she has met online, and its gets pretty entertaining. But what I really did not like, is the fact that Urasek makes a lot of comments about the people shes met based on this appearance after writing about how she used to get bullied about her looks. Hypocrite much? Nothing wrong with sharing her bad experiences, but no need to attack peoples appearances.
